Fisal Ansari, also known as Sal Pott, is the author of the novel and screenplay The Raj of Echo Park (2025) — a coming-of-age story set in 1993 Echo Park, following a young man navigating a difficult family past. The screenplay was a second-round selection with the Launch Pad competition in 2022.
Fisal is a writer from Echo Park, where he was born and raised on October 30th, 1973, to immigrant parents from India. His parents migrated to Pakistan during the war, then took a plane to Echo Park.
Fisal attended John Marshall High School, graduating in 1993, and went on to receive a bachelor's degree in print journalism and a master's in library science from the University of Arizona at Tucson. He has worked as a writer for public television station KCET-TV alongside Huell Howser and for PBS News, and has been published in the San Fernando Business Journal and The Sun newspaper. He has studied writing since 2009 with Pilar Alessandra's On the Page writing studio, Corey Mandell's writing studio, and the UCLA Extension Writers' Program.

Sal Khan, 19, was burned by a hot knife at the age of five by his father, Riaz Khan, known as Ray. The story spans from 1973 to 1993, set in Echo Park, Los Angeles. Sal grows up without conviction in himself, but knows he has something beautiful inside of him — and he must escape his father's grip, a gang bully named Franky the Bone Crusher from a gang called White Fence who wants him dead, and a mother, Yasmin Khan, who imposes a rigid Indo-Pakistani Muslim culture on him.
Sal has about three months before he graduates from Echo Park High and must dodge his father's demand that he leave for Marine Corps boot camp or get out of the house. Broken inside since the age of five, Sal struggles with emotional dependency, finding himself codependent on his father — and he must free himself of that bondage by finally confronting his father about why he chose to burn him so long ago.
Sal also has to convince Walt Disney producer and acting coach Lou Sacks that he's the right person for the lead role in an upcoming Disney film — or it's off to the Marines.
Sal's journey is about breaking the cycle of emotional dependency and tapping into the beauty within himself. He'll face culture clash, identity crisis, interracial love, and Hollywood excess along the way. He's in love with Brooklyn Rotolo, his high school sweetheart, and spends his time in Ms. Adrian's drama class acting out scenes with her.
The emotional core of the story is Sal's relationship with his father — a traumatic childhood incident involving a hot kitchen knife and a lesson in "being a man" has left Sal terrified of his father's disapproval.
Sal is given the chance to audition for the lead role in a Walt Disney feature and must prove to producer and acting coach Lou Sacks that he's got what it takes. But between his PTSD, an impending Marine Corps enlistment forced on him by his father, a rivalry with a local gang member, and the emotional intimacy Brooklyn demands, Sal finds solace only in his craft.
